In this video DETERMIND researchers John Hammond and Ben Hicks, based at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, discuss their groundbreaking study on the diagnosis experiences of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people living with dementia.

As we approach the planned end date of the project, the team thought it would be beneficial to update the participants on the study’s progress and highlight our future aims.

Elena Herrero is a Research Assistant for the DETERMIND project. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, Neuroscience focus.

I am thrilled to have joined the DETERMIND team at Sussex and have really enjoyed getting to know the team and some of our participants already. 

I am delighted to have joined the Sussex DETERMIND team in July 2022, having been welcomed with nothing but smiles (and plenty of coffee!). DETERMIND is a project close to my heart because my family is personally affected by dementia, so I feel truly honoured to have the opportunity to support other families to have their voices heard in future policy.

I have worked in care from the age of 15, starting out as a tea girl in a rest home that was owned by a friend’s parents. I was hooked listening to people’s life stories and learning more about them and their lives.
