Workstream 3 - Compare usage and costs of dementia services with the outcomes they produce.

Led by

Cambridge University and London School of Economics and Political Science

Aims

We will look at how much services are used and how much they cost compared to outcomes for the people with dementia who use those services.

Summary

This workstream will look at the links between how much services are used and how these impact on outcomes for people with dementia and their carers.  Outcomes include health and quality of life. We will answer the following questions:

  1. Do people with dementia who use services more have better outcomes?

  2. What are the links between how much care costs and outcomes?

  3. Do people who do not get the care they need have worse outcomes?

  4. Do the backgrounds of people with dementia and their carer impact on the link between their use of services and outcomes?

By analysing the statistics, this workstream will look at the relationships between quality of life for people with dementia, the services they use and the costs of those services and whether these are connected to the background of the person with dementia and their care.

1. Recruit 900 people with dementia and follow their progress over 3 years
2. Investigate the inequalities and barriers to dementia care
3. Compare usage and costs of dementia services with the outcomes they produce
4. Compare outcomes for those who fund their own care with those who don't
5. Investigate how people with dementia and their carers plan and make decisions
6. Compare outcomes for people diagnosed with dementia earlier or later
7. Coordinate the 6 other workstreams to keep the project on track
